Burngreave Environment Day – Fun and Falconry!
Story: Anne Grange
The staff and volunteers of Green City Action must have all sighed with relief on the morning of the Environment Day on Sunday 20th May. After last year’s torrential downpours, this year saw the event take place in perfect May weather, with attendees and stallholders basking in warm sunshine.
“It’s really chilled out – a real community event,” commented one visitor, one of many people relaxing on the steps of Abbeyfield Park House with a drink from Betty’s tea stall.
A large, friendly crowd enjoyed a display by Abbeyfield Road’s very own dry-stone walling craftsman and stalls about community forestry, recycling and people had the chance to hire tools or buy a hanging basket crammed with flowers from Green City Action. Free cycle testing was very popular with families, having their bikes tested for safety and an inflatable football pitch and mobile climbing wall also kept the kids entertained.
A falconry display – with a trained peregrine falcon and a vulture flying around in the park drew a fascinated crowd of local children who lined up for the experience of large birds of prey flying millimetres over their heads!
