The latest Firshill and Passhouses Roads DIY Street event took place on Saturday January 19th in Firshill School.
Several residents, including 5 of the local young lads, Councillor Jackie Drayton, Area Action Officer Marilyn King and Safer Neighbourhoods Officer Lisa Moran, all came along to take part in this interesting session.
We started off with a walkabout in the streets to look at them in detail, and at the issues that affect them. It initially seemed a strange thing to do since the residents already felt that they know their streets well – but the walk, and the questionnaire that people filled in afterwards highlighted a lot of detail about the way the streets look and are maintained, how they feel and how they are used by residents and non-residents.
In the discussion that followed lunch, and based on the answers on the questionnaires, several key points were brought out that will be fed into the next steps of the DIY process. The points included ideas of ways of encouraging more residents to become involved in their DIY Street, the importance of redesigning the streets so they become attractive residential areas rather than traffic-through routes (which will also help to reduce antisocial behaviour) and specific design ideas.
