February's area panel meeting

The last area panel meeting on 20 February

At the last area panel meeting in February we had two interesting presentations.

One from Andy Nolan, the council’s lead manager on sustainable development and environmental strategy, and the other from Robert Almond from the council’s Sustainable Housing, Affordable Warmth (SHAW) team. Andy explained how climate change and carbon emissions from our transposrt services will have an impact on Sheffield. Both Andy and Robert discussed new ways in which we could reduce our carbon emissions in Burngreave – for example using ground source heat pumps at Crabtree Grange and biomass boilers at Carwood estate and at Sorby House.

Another important change is a huge drive by the SHAW team for energy efficiency and local home insulation schemes.

We also agreed to have a local discussion about how to reduce the use of car travel to and from local schools. If we’re to have bigger local schools by 2010, this can’t lead to greater congestion outside the school gates. In fact, the council want to see a reduction in the number of cars taking children, parents and staff to and from school. How is this possible? We’ll find out soon.

The minutes of the meeting are available on the council website (www.sheffield.gov.uk)
