For the last year, twenty gallant souls from around Burngreave, Pitsmoor, Firshill and Fir Vale have been volunteering to be street champions.
They’re all committed to making sure their area isn’t let down by poor environmental maintenance. Some people have organised local actions to improve the area such as planting, floral displays, litter picks and so on.
If the council (like Street Force), Sheffield Homes and Green City Action have staff to respond, then they need to have up-to-date information about which areas and locations need attention. This is where the street champions come in.
In the last year, we’ve dealt with
Rubbish
Vegetation
Barking and unattended dogs
Fly-tipping
Grass cutting standards
Window cleaning and stairwell maintenance
Riparian responsibilities
Parks and open spaces
Planning enforcement
Each champion is issued with a handbook containing a whole range of issues that might arise and who should be contacted. They’re also given a unique identity number so that when they report a matter, there’s an easy way of tracking outcome. They meet every three months to talk about difficult issues and find out how others have sorted problems out. Each champion gets £20 a year to cover expenses such as phone calls.
Last year, we concentrated mainly on Page Hall, Firshill estate and Carwood. Now we’re inviting those of you from elsewhere in the area to participate and sign up. Our next meeting is the annual anniversary on Monday 21 April at 1pm in Abbeyfield Park House. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided.
