Refugee and Asylum Seekers quarterly report May 2007

Dear member,

As you may have heard in the national news, refugees have been scapegoated for the lack of council/affordable housing across the country. This is despicable play by the government, who have allowed wholesale demolition of council housing and prevented replacement stock. It favours the private sector (housingassociations and private l;andlords) to provide social housing, a policy which has resulted in 54,000 people in Sheffield on the active housing list.

The Kurdish community Centre on Verdon Street is likely to close as funding is running out, so a group of very vulnerable people in the community will be left high and dry.

Once again the working group is hoping to host an event on Ellesmere Green on Saturday 23rdJune as part of Refugee Week. At the moment we are trying to get together a planning group working in partnership with Burngreave New Deal for Communities. If you would like the itinerary for Refugee Week see leaflets available.
