Trees, trees, trees

I am Tim Shortland the Community Forester for the Burngreave area. Cleaning and greening the environment by tree planting is one of my job’s objectives.

Firshill Crescent has been identified as a potential planting site as trees have recently been removed on the estate. These tree removals and tree pruning works are part of a long-term phased programme of work to manage existing trees whilst removing and replacing trees that are of an inappropriate species, diseased and in unsuitable locations. As newly planted trees can take some time to establish the planting scheme may seem to be out pacing the removal. This is to ensure that the estate remains one of the greener and more desirable in the area. All planting locations have been chosen so that the trees do not block light to any of the properties and the species are appropriate for a housing estate. Species are carefully selected to minimise issues such as shading and have small crowns, light foliage canopies and non-aggressive root systems.

I am sending letters to all the properties in the immediate proximity of the proposed planting locations. Please feel free to contact me on the telephone number below should you have any concerns.

The species of tree we have selected are Liquidambar styraciflua Lane Roberts, Acer griseum, the Paperbark Maple, Sorbus hupehensis, the Hupeh Rowan and Betula ermanii. Descriptions of the variety of trees we plan to plant will be at the Firshill TARA meeting and I hope this will reassure you regarding any future issues relating to tree type problems.

If you would like to suggest any possible tree planting locations or to discuss different tree species on the estate you are welcome to telephone me on 2734190.

Tim will also be at the Firshill TARA Meeting on 8th October 2007, come and ask him questions.
