Sheffield Theatres treated Burngreave to free performances of a Handful of Henna in February, funded by New Deal. So many people came to the first event at the Vestry Hall, that a second performance was arranged. The project was part of a community tour which included performances at Pye Bank and Firs Hill schools.

Tribute to Derek Dooley Burngreave born & bred Football legend who played football for Sheffield Wednesday & managed the team in 1970s before moving across the football divide to join Sheffield United in 1974. He had the rare distinction of being respected by both of Sheffield's Football clubs.

Bonfire night in Burngreave

Bonfire night was celebrated magnificently here in Burngreave on the 3rd November at Petre Street as a small fair ended with spectacular fireworks taking place on the field. There was a great turnout considering the cold weather, with approximately 150-200 people.

On 24th October the children were entertained by Jamaica’s famous dub poet Jean Binta Breeze and developed their cultural awareness through stories, songs and games. Around 200 people attended the opening of the “Coal, Frankincense and Myrrh” Exhibition at Weston Park Museum on 30th October. Fir Vale Festival 2007

Fir Vale Festival took place on 9th of September at Fir Vale School. This event seemed well organised and the presence of people was good. I noticed lots of happy faces. A lot of those present were young people, and they created a wonderful atmosphere, especially the young people from Slovakia who were dancing spontaneously, and running and laughing as they enjoyed the event.

Past, present & future

This month marks a milestone for the Burngreave Messenger – the end of the present New Deal funded project and hopefully, the start of a new project. If the new project gets approved by the New Deal Board on 29th November, the Messenger will produce fewer editions per year but have a new focus on supporting volunteers, developing the new Messenger website and getting independent funding.
