Now with their new Development Manager, Steve Gayle, and administrator Daniel Stanley there is a possibility of new life for our community forum.

Winnie Bentley has lived at the Toll Bar House at the top of Burngreave Road for 32 years. Built in 1836, the house is a Grade II listed building. As with many other old buildings, there was lead on the roof, but in July 2007, for the first time in the house’s history, this lead was stolen.

Earlier that day, residents of Melrose Road heard shots being fired into the young people’s flats belonging to Arches Housing Association and managed by Stonham. Rain fell continuously on 15th June, overwhelming the drains and flooding cellars. As the electricity was switched off, over 100 residents were evacuated from water contaminated with sewage. For those who couldn’t get to family or friends, there was Fir Vale School and later Longley Day Centre for an overnight stay. The Pakistan Advice Centre (PAC) was amongst support services on hand to help.

A new development of ‘eco-friendly’ social housing is under construction at the Earldom site, located on the hillside between Catherine Road and Grimesthorpe Road. The developers, Arches Housing Association, believe that this project might be the first, in Sheffield, to achieve the government’s ‘EcoHomes Excellent’ standard. On completion the site will be officially named ‘Burnwood’.
