New Deal: Request to sell Forum House

BNDfC has formally approached our funders, the Department for Communities and Local Government, to see if it would be possible to have the clawback restrictions currently in place on Forum House, lifted. This would mean that technically we could then sell the building without having to repay the NDC grant used to buy it in the first place.

Parkwood School Social Cohesion Conference

Sheffield Hilton Hotel Friday 11th July

Parkwood School supports children from a range of areas, including Pye Bank, in Burngreave, where there are families from a range of cultures including many Somali, Pakistani and Yemeni families as well as white British and Caribbean families. The school also supports families from Shirecliffe and Southey Green where there are mainly white British families.

Sorby House and Vestry Hall

The year long £4 million New Deal project to refurbish Sorby House, due to start in September 2005 has been delayed until October 2005. Delays are in part due to failed negotiations with Ladbrokes who want to stay in the building and are unwilling to leave during the renovations, which will add costs to the project.

A new start for Burngreave’s Community Forum

The Burngreave Community Action Forum was established in 1997, to be the voice of influence for the community and communities in Burngreave. The Forum has had a difficult time in recent years. Its managing organisation, Burngreave Community Action Trust, collapsed in 2006 with the loss of it’s funding and the staff team. Now with their new Development Manager, Steve Gayle, and administrator Daniel Stanley there is a possibility of new life for our community forum.

Council Under Pressure on Freehold Sales

TESCO approved

Tesco’s plan for a 10,000m2 store at Spital Hill was approved by Sheffield City Council on 14th January. The store will include 871 parking spaces, a petrol station, car wash, recycling unit and offices. 395 jobs will be created in the Tesco store and a further 175 elsewhere in the development.

Skinnerthorpe receive CPO

Sheffield City Council has issued Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) against over 140 Fir Vale homes. Some home owners on Skinnerthorpe Road, Owler Lane, Bagley Road and Barnsley Road will be forced to sell their homes, so that the houses can be knocked down, as part of the Burngreave and Fir Vale Masterplan.

Northern General drop £95,000 bill

Last issue the Messenger highlighted the case of Aman Ali, a refused asylum seeker, who was badly injured and received a massive bill from the Northern General Hospital. This bill has now been written off thanks to the support from his friends.

Decisions on funding for New Deal projects

New Deal is now in its fifth year of a ten-year programme to spend £52 million regenerating Burngreave. After committing large sums of money to projects such as the Sorby House and Vestry Hall refurbishments it became apparent that New Deal faced some difficult decisions, as there would not be enough money to continue all the projects.

Survey results

New Deal will be well pleased with the results of the recent Household Survey, which shows nearly two-thirds of those asked think New Deal has improved the area a great deal or a fair amount. In January 2006 Forum House was in receivership. The receiver was looking to sell the property and it was suggested that the market rate could be in excess of £750k. BNDfC negotiated with the receivers and offered £450k, which would come from the money already allocated for the development of Spital Hill through the Transformational Projects.

Grimesthorpe Inquiry

Outline planning applications to build houses on the north side of Smithies Field, next to Grimesthorpe Road, were refused by the Council last November, because the Council considers this land to be a greenfield site, partly open space and having trees on it which are subject to tree preservation orders. The applicants, Redwall Developments, are appealing against this decision.
