Story by Graham Jones
A number of local residents have formed the Burngreave Clean Air Campaign due to frequent illegal levels of pollutants on the main roads where some of our schools are situated.
We have concentrated our petitioning around local schools as children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of the pollutants caused by traffic, as are babes in the womb, and the elderly. It is also a particular hazard for the many taxi drivers who live in our area. In addition we have submitted an e-petition to the council’s website.
The council has recently launched an Air Aware Campaign and a consultation on the prevention of the idling of motor engines with a public meeting promised later in September. Our group are already thinking of our questions for that meeting.
