A new football project is more than reaching its goals. Local resident Sahra Abdi has put the project together with funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner. It is particularly aimed at young people from the Somali community, but is open to all up to 13 years of age. Mohamed and Mukhtar are coaching the future football stars of Burngreave at the Ellesmere Park pitch by Lyons Close every Saturday from 3.30 – 5.30 pm.
Sahra was hoping to get 20 young people involved, but demand has been huge with 40-50 coming along to sessions. While the children hone their football skills, their parents and other local residents litter pick and clean up the area. Sahra told the Messenger:
“The sessions are going really well and the litter picking is an added bonus. Before, there was very little going on in the area. We’ve worked closely with Councillor Mark Jones who has come along to talk to parents, which is improving relationships across the community. What we need now is more funding to continue the project and more volunteers to get involved!”
