Sheffield City Council press release

People across Sheffield are being reminded that the deadline to register for the forthcoming Local Election and the first-ever Sheffield City Region Mayoral Election is just two weeks away, by 11.59pm on Tuesday 17 April.

If you live in Sheffield it is your democratic right to vote for your local councillor and for Sheffield City Region’s first-elected mayor on Thursday 3 May 2018. Those who are not registered will not be able to vote in either election.

If you’re not registered or are unsure about your registration, you need to check and apply by 17 April.

You only need to register once – you don’t need to register separately for each election. However, you must register again if you’ve changed address, name or nationality.

Sheffield City Council is advising people not to leave registering to the last minute. If you are registered to vote, your polling card should have arrived last week. If it hasn’t, you may need to register to vote.

Your polling card will have been sent to the address where you are registered – if you’ve moved you need to make sure your electoral roll details are up-to-date.

And if you’re going to be away on polling day, Thursday 3 May, make sure you’ve applied for a postal vote before Wednesday 18 April.

If you can’t vote in person you can apply for a proxy vote, which means someone else can vote on your behalf, this can be applied for until Wednesday 25 April.

Chief returning officer John Mothersole said:

“This year, for the first time, Sheffield’s residents can not only vote for their local councillor, but also for our region’s first mayor.

“I would appeal to people across the city to make sure they have received their polling card, or have taken the necessary steps to ensure they can vote on 3 May, whether that’s checking if they’re registered, applying for a postal vote or arranging a proxy vote.

“Registering to vote is quick and easy. People just need their National Insurance number, date of birth and address to hand.

“This election day people have the opportunity to make their vote count locally and regionally. Don’t waste that right, register and have a say”.
