Story by Saleema Imam | Photo by Victoria Smith.

An exhibition about World Burial practices is open in the North chapel in Burngreave Cemetery during Easter 2022. An informative book about the exhibition written by Steve Cook is available.

Explore the many ways of burying the dead from earliest known times.

Artist Victoria Smith has created models illustrating the various burial methods from the book including: Sumerian slipper coffin, Minoan Larnax burial chest, Dakota Sioux sky burial, Japanese Jamon jar burial and Guatemalan “Day of the Dead” kites.

There is a memorial table for visitors to add a name they wish to be commemorated. We also wish to remember those who died of Covid-19.

Bring a small photo or memento. Pebbles and pens available. Copies of  Steve’s book World Burial Practices available by donation.
